Vancouver is one of the most photogenic cities in the world. Mountains, ocean, forest, and city skyline — all within an hour of each other. If you’re planning an elopement here, you’re spoiled for choice. The hard part isn’t finding a beautiful location. It’s narrowing it down.
After photographing elopements and intimate ceremonies across the Lower Mainland and beyond, these are the spots we keep coming back to — and why.
Bowen Island
A 20-minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay and you’re in another world entirely. Bowen Island has the kind of quiet that’s hard to find anywhere near a major city. Old-growth forest, rocky shoreline, and almost zero crowds make it ideal for an elopement that feels genuinely private.
Killarney Lake is the standout location — a still, forested lake that photographs beautifully in almost any light. The walk in is short enough that you can arrive in ceremony attire without it being a whole expedition. Sunset here, when the light filters through the trees and hits the water, is something else entirely.
Lynn Canyon
Everyone knows Capilano Suspension Bridge. Almost nobody elopes there, and for good reason — it’s a tourist attraction, not a sanctuary.
Lynn Canyon is the local alternative. Same dramatic suspension bridge over a deep canyon, same old-growth forest, but without the entrance fee and without the crowds. You can find genuine quiet here even on a weekend afternoon, especially if you arrive early or stay late.
The canyon itself is stunning — tall cedars, rushing water far below, shafts of light cutting through the canopy. It has a rawness to it that the more manicured parks lack.
Joffre Lakes
This one requires a bit of effort. Joffre Lakes is roughly two and a half hours from Vancouver, up through the Sea-to-Sky corridor. The hike to the upper lake is steep. But the payoff is one of the most dramatic landscapes in the province — glacial blue water, mountain peaks, and virtually no development in any direction.
This is a location for couples who want their elopement to feel like an adventure. It’s physically demanding and requires solid footwear, but the photos speak for themselves. We’ve shot here in summer sun, overcast conditions, and with the first snow of autumn on the peaks — every season produces something different.
Porteau Cove
If mountains reflected in still water is the aesthetic you’re after, Porteau Cove delivers it cleanly. It sits right on Howe Sound, about 45 minutes north of Vancouver on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, with direct views across the water to the mountains on the opposite shore.
Dawn is the magic hour here. When the light is low and warm and the water is glassy, the reflections are almost perfectly symmetrical. There’s a provincial campground nearby, which means some foot traffic, but early arrivals almost always have the cove to themselves.
It’s also a very accessible location — no hiking required, easy parking, and flat ground throughout.
Lighthouse Park
Lighthouse Park sits at the end of a peninsula in West Vancouver, surrounded on three sides by ocean. The light at the western tip looks out across the Strait of Georgia toward Vancouver Island. On clear days, the mountain views from here are extraordinary.
The forest interior is striking too — enormous old-growth Douglas firs, rocky bluffs, and trails that wind through terrain that feels ancient. The variety within a relatively small park means you can move between forest and coastline without much travel time, which makes it practical for longer sessions.
One Thing Worth Knowing
Every location on this list is on public land. That means you don’t need a permit for a small, private ceremony — though parks with higher foot traffic do enforce rules about gatherings above a certain size. For a true elopement (just the two of you and your photographer), you’re generally in the clear.
What you do need is flexibility with timing. The best light — and the lowest crowds — happen at the edges of the day. Early morning especially. The couples who’ve told us their elopement felt genuinely private and magical were almost always the ones willing to start at sunrise.
