Fairmont Hotel Vancouver Engagement Session — Lena & Darris

When Lena and Darris reached out about their engagement session, they had a clear vision: something elegant, something that felt like downtown Vancouver at its best, and something a little different from the outdoor forest-and-mountain sessions that dominate this city’s engagement photography.

The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver was the obvious choice.

The Location

The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver sits at the corner of Burrard and Georgia, and it’s been one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks since 1939. The château-style architecture — the copper roof, the carved stone, the grand proportions — gives the building a weight and permanence that most Vancouver architecture doesn’t have.

What makes it work photographically is the contrast. The ornate, old-world interior plays beautifully against modern attire. The light in the lobby and corridors has a quality that’s hard to engineer — warm, directional, filtered through tall windows in a way that’s inherently flattering.

The exterior is equally strong. Georgia Street gives you the full facade. The side entrances have architectural details that most people walk past without noticing. And within a few blocks, you have access to the courtyard of the Vancouver Art Gallery, the tree-lined streets of the West End, and the Coal Harbour waterfront — all of which we used.

Lena & Darris

These two are easy to photograph, which sounds like a small thing and isn’t. They’re comfortable with each other in a way that shows up immediately on camera — there’s a natural ease between them that you can’t manufacture.

Lena had a clear sense of what she wanted for the session: elegant but not stiff, fashion-forward but genuine. Darris was up for whatever, which is the ideal attitude for an engagement session. Together they moved through the spaces with confidence, and the images reflect that.

On Shooting Downtown

Downtown Vancouver presents specific challenges that outdoor locations don’t. Foot traffic, variable light conditions between buildings, logistics around access to certain spaces. But it also offers something that forests and mountains can’t: variety within a small geographic area.

In a two-hour session around the Fairmont, we covered the hotel interior, the exterior facade, the Georgia Street streetscape, and the surrounding blocks — each with its own aesthetic and its own quality of light. The result is a gallery that feels cohesive but varied, which is harder to achieve in a single natural setting.

For couples who live in the city and love it, a downtown session feels true to who they are in a way that a mountain backdrop doesn’t always manage.

Working with Hotel Locations

A quick practical note for couples considering hotel venues for engagement sessions: most major hotels have policies around commercial photography in their spaces. It’s worth contacting their events or public relations team in advance to confirm what’s permitted and whether any fee applies.

For some hotels, a simple conversation is all it takes. For others, there are more formal arrangements. Either way, the conversation is worth having — the alternative is arriving at a beautiful location and being turned away, which has happened to us and is entirely avoidable.

If you’re thinking about an engagement session in Vancouver and want to talk through locations that would work for your style, we’d love to hear from you.
